That's Eddie Waitkus, the guy who got shot and was the inspiration for the Roy Hobbs character. The woman who shot him, Ruth Steinhagen (age 19 at the time), died three months ago.

Funny thing: Yesterday's Random Past Spring Training Moment Of The Day was Willie Stargell, and tonight he was a correct response on Jeopardy! And it showed a picture of him!
And thanks to anybody who gave my Doubront/Gardner thing an upvote on reddit. It's up over 100 points as of now.

Check out Pops's license plate: WIL 8! (Corbis made a few mistakes, but hey, it's only the player's name (Willy) and the city name (Pittsburg). And a lot of people spell "young" with an "m." Oh well, what an awesome picture.)

Bonus: Anyone know who the other Pirate is? There are only a few guys on the '74 team with a number ending in 3, and they're not him. Also, what's on his sleeve? It almost looks like a hole, as if he ripped off a sleeve patch, and they did have one in '73, for Clemente, so maybe he wanted to keep the "21" as a souvenir, knowing they were gonna get new unis for the regular season anyway.

One of my favorite baseball facts is Connie Mack being the manager of the A's for FIFTY years. Another one is him wearing those suits. Here he is telling a pitcher how the hell to pitch 83 years ago. For people like my parents who were alive when Mack was managing, it must be weird to think it's been more than SIXTY years since he retired.

("Random Past Spring Training Moment of the Day," for those who forgot, since I only said it on the first one.)

Now let's look at a classic Manny Being Manny moment. When playing in a game for the first time in five months after an injury, Manny forgot all about the fact that he might actually have to slide into a base:
“I sort of fell down [...] I forgot about that one. You don’t really practice sliding.”
Oh, that wacky Manny with his wacky hair, always forgetting how to play baseball. What a clown! OH WAIT, it wasn't Manny who said that, it was DEREK JETER, two days ago. Of course, nobody accused him of being aloof or un-classy or un-professional in any way.

Jimmie Foxx is shown here with major wood in Ft. Myers, FL, then the winter home of the A's, around 1930. It almost looks like there's a giant home plate at his feet. I guess they were trying to show what a Beast he was, but don't larger versions of objects just make a human look smaller? Shouldn't they have given him a toothpick and a saucer?

Wait! Post not over. When trying to find the actual date, which Getty Images said was "around 1930," I noticed Corbis had the uncropped version. And it says it's from 1935. In August! In Philadelphia. So this isn't a spring training photo at all. But there's no way I'm taking it down. And I'm curious as to what/where that building is.

This Yankee stuff is getting fun. Grandy already out for a while, Cashman on crutches, now Horse Face out 8-10 weeks, and of course Youk should be out most of the year with his usual injuries. It's gonna be a Nunez-fest in The Bronx in '13.
