Sox Lose War On Drugs

Well, the "Internet" is saying that Bobby Valentine has accepted the Red Sox' offer to be the team's next manager. I just hope the guy realizes he's got a lot of talent on his team, and he can pretty much sit back and let them play, as opposed to....opening his mouth and letting a bunch of drivel outta there. And trying to build a spaceship out of orange peels and an old Volkswagen or something. Don't you love how the same people who got rid of Manny Fucking Ramirez go and hire Bobby Valentine?

Fortunately we're just dealing with a manager here and not a player, so I'm not gonna worry about it too much, I have no problem with just living with whoever the hell we got, so, whatever. He's our guy now--hopefully the team plays well enough where we don't have to talk about him too much. I mean, yes, it will be fun to witness, but unlike the dumbass media, we fans just want the team to win, we don't give a fuck about what's "interesting" or what sells.

I'll definitely have to go to his restaurant this winter, though. Hopefully they Sox-ify it a little, and hopefully this will lead to some more Soxiness in Fairfield County. IN FACT, it just hit me now! This could be the key to NESN in Fairfield! If I run into Bobby, I am bringing that up, I assure you.

Comments:
At least they made a decision! I'll analyze it later. I'm just so very, very thrilled that they made a decision.

W.H. Auden's 'August 1968'

The Ogre does what ogres can,
Deeds quite impossible for Man,
But one prize is beyond his reach,
The Ogre cannot master Speech:
About a subjugated plain,
Among its desperate and slain,
The Ogre stalks with hands on hips,
While drivel gushes from his lips.

Can't say that about Bobby V. Sometimes you gotta roll the bones.

The "sit back and let them play approach" didn't work so well for Tito last September, which is why we're in this mess now. Even acknowledging all the pitching injuries, when a team with that much talent craps their pants as badly as the Sox did in the first and last months of the season, something else is wrong and needs to be addressed. I'm cautiously optimistic that Valentine can have a good 2 or 3 year run. He's a very solid in-game manager, and I suspect he'll do a better job at getting the team prepared for the season than Tito did over the last couple of years. I doubt he'll be around much longer than that; the longer his regime, the more likely it gets ugly at the end.

Despite my misgivings about Bobby Valentine, I think AJM is more or less right. Bobby V has a shot at a good but short term stint managing the Red Sox. The edgy personality will light a few fires and it will probably help in 2012. After that it shall probably be tiresome. Hopefully when he does leave, it's because he wants to do drugs full time and not because the team has experienced some sort of dramatic failure.

By "sit back" I didn't mean with clubhouse issues--which none of us really know anything about anyway. I just mean kind like with third base coaches, the less you hear their name, the more things are running smoothly. I'm the type of person who believes the manager is as good as the team he has, so with these guys the more he tries to go out of his way to do the more things will get fucked up and we end up with a circus.
