Chanhattanhenge
My friend Chan, who I lived with in NYC and who still resides there, took this shot last night. It was, of course, Manhattanhenge, when the setting sun lines up with the street grid.
One thing I love about the 'henge is how I discovered it without knowing about it ahead of time. While living in Manhattan, I was walking along 33rd with Chan, and was struck by just how long everybody's shadow was. It just seemed odd, with all the skyscrapers in the way, that you'd ever see shadows that long completely on the ground. So I guess that night we did some electronified searchin', and learned about the phenomenon. It's a beautiful thing. Try to go to NYC in late June or early July to catch it. (There's also the sunrise version which occurs on different dates, but, come on, getting up early? Who does that?) And if you can't make it to New York, search online for pictures of Manhattanhenge. There are some great ones, but here's one from some guy's blog showing just his own long shadow.

As you can see at the bottom of Chan's pic when you enlarge it, the whole thing has gotten quite popular. In a few years, they may need to have special street closings for it. And you won't be able to see any shadows because it'll be wall-to-wall people!
