Still Possible

Lester did no wrong tonight. Easy win.

So we're 7 back of the Yanks, 7.5 of Tampa. Hear me out now. If we can win our next two in Seattle, we'll be between 5 and 7 back of the Yanks, and between 5.5 and 7.5 of the Rays. I'm shooting for the Yanks again. They're falling apart. And we have 6 left against them. Think of it this way. If we were 7 up on them with 6 to play head-to-head, and we'd just lost 4 in a row, the Boston media would be making rear view mirror non-jokes hourly. As it is, they've long since moved on to football. Of course, I could be wrong, I haven't listened to/read any Boston sports media in months. And let me tell you, I have seen the top of the mountain. And it is good.

I love how Ichiro climbed the wall on a home run tonight. That's what I'd do. Every time. Why not?

It's not clear from how you wrote it, but I assume you meant either/or. Assuming the Sox sweep the Mariners (and I can't remember the last time they swept anyone), they can either be 5 behind the Yanks and 7.5 back of Tampa, or 5.5 behind Tampa and 7 behind the Yanks (or six behind the Yanks and 6.5 behind the Rays). Plus the Yanks & Rays have a four game series in the Bronx next week where the Sox can only gain on one team at a time. They still have a very slim chance of making the wild card, but because of those Yanks/Rays games, they really have almost zero chance of winning the division. And of the two teams, the chance (tiny as it is) of catching the Yanks is far greater just because of the six remaining head to head games. Of course, this Youks/Pedey-Less team hasn't done much lately to show that they can go on a September run like the '51 Giants or '64 Cardinals.

And speaking of the '64 Cardinals, Ichiro jumping for Kalish's dong was reminiscent of Mike "Moonman" Shannon jumping for Mantle's game-winning hr in Game 3 of the '64 World Series, even though it landed in the RF upper deck of Yankee Stadium.

5-7 and 5.5-7.5, adding up to a total of...10 and 10.5 or whatever, you get the idea.

And yes gotta catch Yanks--which will be WC at that point.

no, 10.5. the point is, a sweep gains 2 more *total* games on Yanks/Rays. I am hoping they both come off the Yanks' lead.

I don't get what the *total* games matters though? They're chasing two individual teams, and really because of the schedule only have a shot at catching one of them. That's the other thing about those remaining six Yanks/Rays games....basically one of the two has to sweep the other to even open the door a little bit for the Sox.

The good thing about the Rays winning last night was knocking the MFYs into 2nd place. The bad thing about it is, well, I really hate the Devil Dogs too. But the good outweighs the bad.

Just sayin', if we sweep, that's what we're lookin' at. One of them losing both, yes, is preferred.

("One of them" = "Yanks")
