From looking at various news sources on the Web today, I've concluded that the Yankees didn't clinch a playoff spot, only Derek Jeter did.

Also from the Puke Department: on our tiny local morning newspaper today, on the upper right above the nameplate, is a reference to the Yankees. "Yankees to have another busy October," blared the bold print, urging the readers to check page C1, and the accompanying photo was - wait for it - a cutout of Jeter with his arm in the air, celebrating a routine groundout in the fourth inning of a scoreless game in April, or whatever.
