Manny In...No, Out

Manny's out of the lineup tonight with his sore knee, but before that news was announced, a lineup was posted with him in it. Which is interesting, because it shows what Tito was going to do with Papi back. He indeed dropped Jacoby out of the leadoff spot. In fact, he did what I thought he would do--put Pedroia leadoff, then Youk, Papi & Manny, Lowell, Drew, etc., with Jacoby last. Pedroia's not a leadoff man--but he's hitting the crap out of the ball, and the 1 spot only means you leadoff one inning. As the game goes on, you've got Jacoby setting up Dustin, Youk, Papi, etc.

But that lineup will have to wait. Instead, it's Jacoby, Dustin, Papi, and then, your cleanup hitter: Kevin Youkilis. Then Lowell, Drew, Lowrie, Tek, Coco.

Comments:
Jere, this game has me wanting to stick my head in the car door and slam it repeatedly.

I'm firmly convinced the 18/19 games we play against the Yankees every year is going to take 10 years off my life.

Minimum.

Well, Pedroia doesn't LOOK like a leadoff man, but if it were my team, I'd tell him that he's MY leadoff man, and that he is to expect to bat first. Every day. He has a fine OBP of .364, which is actually lower than Youk's, Manny's and Drew's, but he's also quick - won't clog up the basebaths. Stolen bases are overrated, but Dustin has 11 in 12 attempts this year - even better than Jacoby Ellsbury's excellent success rate (35 out of 42).

If Ellsbury's bat comes alive, I would bat him second behind Dustin. The other thing I like about putting Pedroia first is that in the ninth inning of a close game, where the opposing pitcher has gone through the batting order four times, the first guy to get a fifth plate appearance (maybe with runners on base) is Dustin Pedroia, and - just my opinion - ain't no one I'd rather have at bat with the game on the line.

I agree with what you're saying, except for the line about Dustin being quick.

I've seen not a minute of the first two games of this series, and I've not the time to address the Manny issue in-depth, but suffice it to say, if I did, you'd need to cue up every Cosby-related rebuttals you could find...I'm over it, Jere, over it I tell's ya...
