Humanity
I just walked over to the East River on my lunch break. There was a lot of activity in the air and water. Choopers and planes whizzing about, and boats ripping the river in half. Then I looked up and saw a blimp. The Snoopy one. Usually when you see a blimp, it's just hovering or moving very slowly. This one was cruising down the East Side at a pretty good clip. But I couldn't even tell if the engine was on, or if they were just letting the wind take it. It was wobbling all over the place like a helium balloon released by a little kid. Or a person of any other age demographic, for that matter. It was pretty crazy. I felt like I was playing Time Pilot, but with all the eras overlapping.
Stern update: No word yet. But the article on redsox.com says the player given to the O's would be someone not on the largebottleofmaltliqour-humanoid roster, and Stern is on the LBOML-H roster.

It is, right now, "Cash + PTBNL". Speculation from Edes is that it's either Stern or Machado, and that they have to be put through waivers first. Supposedly TB is pissy at us for something and may claim the player, making things annoying and difficult.
They're both similar players, although Machado can play IF and OF. So we'll see. But right now, apparently, its one of those guys in the next couple weeks going back.

Funny how the Sox/D-rays bean brawl war has come to this. Frankly, the Sox have a bit of reputation for being a little underhanded with stuff like this, like the Orioles/Rockies/Sox deal last year that the Sox pulled out of at the last minute, costing the O's Jay Gibbons. So none of this is that surprising. Obviously the O's are so desparate to be rid of Lopez that they're willing to wait to get Stern. So the Rays claim Stern, we pull him off waivers, he stays in AAA till the end of the year and we lose him then. No biggie. Getting a catcher that hits over .185 is the issue of the moment. I think this'll all get worked out.

It cost the Rockies Larry Bigbie. Jay Gibbons is the Orioles RF/ 1B/ DH.
The Rays have no proof of something that is done on varying scales fairly often anyway. They're being petulant about it, it seems.

While they were very desperate to get rid of that $$, the PTBNL on waiver deals is fairly common, and is, in this case, simply related to expediting the deal before Stern clears waivers (which as you pointed out, would solve nothing). This has more to do with Boston's desperation than BAL's, I'd guess.
Of the three main candidates- Alvarez, Machado and Stern, I'd say Alvarez is most likely to be a useful trade chip for something (more) substantial (as a part of a package), Machado is most likely to help the major league team, and unfortunately, Stern was most expendable. So this makes plenty of sense to me.
