'06-'07 Quiz XX

A player whose name was mentioned in a comedy movie from 1980 has a cousin whose first major league hit was historically significant for what reason?

Comments:
Jose Cardenal?
Cousin Bert Campaneris?
Homered twice in his debut?

Nope. Was Cardenal mentioned in a movie?

Movie: Airplane
Player: Manny Mota
Cousin: Jose Baez
His first hit was also the first single at the Kingdome.

Nice! How'd you get it? Was it the Airplane? You're probably getting all 5, but if stj can prove Cardenal was mentioned in a 1980 comedy, he might get some tenths.

"concentrate... concentrate... I've got to concentrate... concentrate... concentrate... Hello?... hello... hello... Echo... echo... echo... Pinch hitting for Pedro Borbon... Manny Mota... Mota... Mota... "

Yippee! I used imdb.com and figured Airplane was likely and then came across the quote. Then it was easy to find the Mota/Baez connection. I was pretty sure I had the correct players, but couldn't figure out the historical significance. After a little bit of stubborn perseverance, I finally found it on retrosheet.

Very nice! The quiz-incidences continue, as when I was about to put this quiz up, I saw and linked that Pesky article, and Manny Mota was mentioned in it!

Nice work Ame!

Nice! From memory too!

Sorry, not from memory. I remember the scene, but not the quote verbatim. Cut and paste job from imdb.com. I'm going to have to rewatch the movie now. My son got the DVD for Christmas.

I got it a few months back--I believe it was called the Don't Call Me Shirley edition...
