The Smiths Of Spacing

Okay, I was able to take a picture of the screen today to get the Smith shot. And I borrowed this Coco shot from Kelly O'Connor's great Sitting Still site. I've sized them roughly the same. Now tell me that SMITH ain't crazily spaced out. These two names each have four normal-sized letters and an I. Actually the M is a little wider than the average letter, but close enough. So....yeah. I've spent way too much time on this, haven't I?

Comments:
Of course, Coco has that slender 1 in his number; and although the zero should be, one would think, the same width as Smith's 9 or 5 I'm not entirely sure that's so. I think using the spacing on "Crisp" would look wrong over a true double-width number. Though I agree it seems a little extreme on Smith as it is now.

But all the short name guys have the very close spacing. TIMILIN and ORTIZ have hardly any spacing, and each have full double digit numbers, 34 and 50. All those short name guys look like they have tiny names. Except Smith.

They also appear to be on there kind of haphazard... like the uni guy ironed them on or whatever it is they do hastily and all last-minute.

Even Coco's '10' is wider than his name, it shouldn't be any different for Smith...

Yes Jere, you have spent way too much time on this!

But now that I'm sort of interested... I'd like to see comparison shots of SMITH and, say, ORTIZ. The fatty number thing aside, Coco is also quite a slender gent.

sam: yeah.

sarah: just look at any shot of Ortiz, Timlin, or Cora. Tiny names! Smith--huge name!

I've also always noticed that on Lugo's home uni, the 23 is giganitc, taking up more than half the space on his back. But he does hike his pants up...

funny this should come up, as i notice this sort of thing all the time.
i almost HAVE to notice numbers and lettering placement, as i used to work at at company that used to do the numbering and letting for Twins right outside fenway. try putting garciaparra nameplates together for years on end. it'll drive you crazy.
you have to find the center of the name and work outwards, thats the we always did it. as the company grew we actually did half of the NHL, the celtics & wizards in the NBA, and other minor league teams. i still stay in contact with my old boss. i think this has helped me with spacial relation in my life at one point or another...
