'06-'07 Quiz XV(i)

The last quiz had problems. Check out what happened in the comments there. So here's the replacement quiz--and I'll make use of this comment moderation thing, since people can buzz in and their answer won't show up until I allow it to. But you only get one guess. The first one to guess right will get three points. The next two will get a point each. And it's easy, because I have to move this along:

When was the last year that another Boston MLB team had a better regular season record than the Red Sox?

  1. The 1947 Boston Braves at 86-68 (.558)

  2. 3 for AJM, 1 for stj and Amy. Nice job, you three. Before that it was like 1934, I think. Those Braves were pretty shitty.

  3. The interesting thing is that the 1948 Braves won the NL pennant, but had 5 fewer wins than the Sox that year. Really a shame that the Sox lost their one-game playoff to the Indians, that was the closest we ever came to an all-Boston World Series. Denny Freakin' Galehouse. I'm pretty sure Joe McCarthy's bench coach back then was Jack Daniels.

Back in '88 I went to a game in Fenway, and sat next to three very old gentlemen who had not attended a baseball game since the Braves had left town in '52. I said to them "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain", and one of them looked at me and said "You! You're too young to know that!"
